Hurricane Season Officially Arrives

Two names for the 2012 hurricane season, Alberto and Beryl, have already been used, even though the official start of the season is today.

My husband Walter has been busy preparing for the season. His most recent preparations have not involved emergency supplies, though.

No, he has been working on his commercial “Hurricane Hut” web site, linking to some of his favorite sites featuring hurricane preparedness recommendations and information, both current and historical, about the potentially lethal storms. I especially liked the interactive sites he showed me today.

Here’s hoping this year we won’t need to activate all those emergency preparedness plans we've worked on.

  1. Good to be prepared. We already had a tornado watch today till 9 P.M.

  2. We have sleeping bags and backpacks full of emergency supplies, including shampoo, soap, toothbrush, paste, medications, etc. stored in our shed outside. We will take them to the emergency shelter when we have to evacuate during an emergency (hurricane, fire, earthquake, etc.).

  3. We also change our supplies every 6 months -- especially medications.

  4. good to be prepared, i am hoping they are right and we will not have any bad storms as they have predicted. the worst damage we ever had to our property was the Friday after the towers went down on 9/11, and it was a Tropical Storm, Gabriella.

  5. I pray your hurricane season is mild. We had terrible storms here last night flash floods and tonados that hit during rush hour. Broken branches everywhere but mercifully, the damage was minimal. Dianne

  6. All the years I spent in Florida, I am so aware of this time of year and often the anxiety it brings. I used to say "if you are prepared, you ain't sacred"--- well not a whole lot anyway.

  7. We certainly seem to be getting an early start to storm season! I, too, hope none of us will need to activate any of those EPP's.
