Attic Art

A spot-on post from a fellow blogger prompted my contemplation of "attic art."

Upon our move to a smaller home, we challenged ourselves: Abandon the urge to add more to all the lovely things we have accumulated in 50-plus years of marriage.

We have wonderful framed prints of Hubby's photos plus paintings by local artists and others we encountered on our travels.

Alas, most of the photos and original art we have collected now reside in our attic!

Our "downsized" home has more windows and French doors that make it feel like we are living in nature. The downside is that there is limited space for hanging art.

We do have room for three of our favorite paintings. We are at a stage in our lives where we are mostly content with that.

I have, however, found wall space for a few treasured family photos--on the wall above our washer and dryer.

I spend a lot of time in that small "laundry nook," and I love having those photos as company!

We are not alone in our art challenge.

Friends close to our age are having the same problem concerning beloved "attic art."

  1. I can’t imagine how hard it would be for me to downsize and I admire your ability to accomplish that! I know I COULD but I’m grateful I don’t have to - at least at this point in my life! And if I ever do, I’ll be grateful that I enjoyed all my pretty things and used them! Nothing is saved in drawers and such but used! The grands drink from stemmed glasses and we use the good silver. My home burned in 1983 and I lost just about everything. But I found comfort in knowing all that I’d had - I’d loved and used.

    1. Hmmm, hadn't thought of that. Have to get my mojo up for being more transparent about my cleaning and organizational deficiencies. May be awhile!😂😳

  3. since I am minimalist to the bone, I don't have this problem and have a hard time understanding others who keep things they don't use. the thing is if the world was like me there would be nothing collected for others to see in the future. I have often said i could be very happy living in a hotel room with clothing and food

  4. Humm, hadn't thought about it but attic art is really a shame. Think you have a nice selection of art mixed with nature.

    1. Yes, the more difficult it is for me to navigate outdoors safely, the more I appreciate our views of nature via windows, French doors, and rollator-friendly porches!

  5. I have to admit that I am a collector of "stuff"...collectibles, some antiques and just "debris" as Linda Chapmen would say. We are purging and selling things on eBay but its such a long drawn out process. The money is nice though. We are trying to get rid of our things that we know our boys and their families don't want to be bothered with..It's an ongoing project for sure.
I would love to see some of your Hubby's pictures sometime.

  6. I have a soft spot for pictures, perhaps because both my son and I are photographers. So far, I have room for too many pictures, but I realize that can change.

  7. We live in a small home anyway...but for me the problem if we had to downsize any more would be what to do with all my sewing stuff.
